ERHS Students take a STAND for Darfur
Written by Sarah Lemoine
Monday, 12 May 2008 21:16

STAND.  Itʼs what we do.

We stand for the people who cannot; The people who have suffered from the genocide in Darfur Africa for more than five years.  Many people remember the events of Rwanda, but very little know that it is happening yet again.  Since 2003, 450,000 people have been murdered and two and a half million people have been forced out of their own country into neighboring Chad and the situation grows more desperate every day.

In order to help the remaining people of Darfur and the people of Chad, a few high school students researched the topic and formed a club on their campus at Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Corona to raise awareness and funds for the people affected by this tragedy.  They are hosting a Darfur Benefit on May 24th from 4pm-9pm at the high school (7447 Cleveland Ave Corona CA 92280).  There will be food, vendors, speaker Laurel Smith and a movie all to promote the awareness of the genocide and to give hope to the community that there is something we can do about this injustice.  Also live performances by Kacey Oberoi, Everlynn, Haddonvale and Sleep is for Sleepers.

STAND would like to extend a warm invitation to all ages to come learn more about the genocide and ways to help.  STAND is also looking for more vendors to set up their booths, advertise for businesses, or sell products or goods of any family friendly kind.  Tickets go on sale Friday May 16th! Presale is $3 and at the door is $5.  Also, if you cannot make it to the event, we have several fundraisers that you may be interested in!

May 14th and 15th from 4pm-9pm we are having a fundraiser at the Pita Pit on Limonite next to Edwards Cinema in the Eastvale Gateway Shopping Center.  Bring a flyer and 20% of your purchases go directly to STAND!

On May 20th we are having a fundraiser at Pick Up Stix, also in the Eastvale Gateway Shopping Center all day, also bring the flyer and 20% is donated to STAND.

On May 31st, a fundraiser at Applebeeʼs will take place.  This is your once in a lifetime opportunity to have flapjacks at Applebeeʼs!  From 8pm-10pm, at Applebeeʼs on Limonite, STAND will be hosting a pancake breakfast.  Tickets are $10 each and include a full breakfast of pancakes, sausage, coffee, tea, bacon and toast!

Weʼd love to see you there!

-Sarah Lemoine is a Junior at Eleanor Roosevelt High School.

River Heights Intermediate student, Ariannah Retamoza wins at State History Day competition and will compete at the National Ariannah Retamoza competition in June!

The California State History Day Finals were held May 8 – 11th at the Double Tree Hotel in Sacramento. Counties from across the State sent their top two entries in five different categories, exhibits, documentaries, historical papers, performances and websites.

Ariannah Retamoza, Eastvale resident and a student from River Heights Intermediate, represented Riverside County at the State competition with her exhibit, “Fleeing Castro: The Communist Conflict & Heartbreaking Compromise that led to Operation Pedro Pan.”

A total of 3,000 students, parents, teachers and judges filled the grand ballroom of the hotel and anxiously waited to see who would represent the State of California at the National History Day competition at the University of Maryland in June. After a busy four days that included set ups, interviews, public viewings and a lot of waiting around. Ariannah finally was able to breathe a sigh of relief when she heard her entry number and name called during the awards ceremony as the winner for the Junior exhibit category.

She has worked really hard and she is excited to be part of the California State Team. Ariannah looks forward to competing for the National title at the University of Maryland, June 15-18th.    Good luck Ari!!! You Rock!!!

Why Honor Our Mothers On Mother"s Day?
Written by Azhar Victor
Sunday, 11 May 2008 07:12

Why should we honor our mothers on Mother's Day? Why should Mother's Day be a day that we set aside each year to show our enduring love and appreciation for our mothers? It is because we were conceived, carried and brought forth into the world by our mothers. They care for us and always have our best interest at heart. Therefore, Mother''s Day is a very important day to celebrate because it honors a figure that is selflessly devoted and dedicated to our well being. We are the creation of our mothers. Our behaviors, values, beliefs, how we speak, what we wear, what we do, and how we feel about the things in the world all stem from our mothers. They are really important role models for all of us. Every girl wants to be just like her mother and every boy wants someone just like his mother when they grow up.

It is important to honor the person who makes the little things happen for us and in our world every single day. Without mothers none of what we do or see today would be possible. We celebrate every government holiday and every religious holiday. Why not celebrate a holiday to honor our mother? They are the reason we are all here in the first place. One of the most important figures in history that is often overlooked. The person who we need and depend on in our lives is our mother. Many of us suckled at her breasts for vital sustenance. Showing her appreciation and love

We have launched many improvements since day 1 including: the ever-popular Thanks Button, 4,000+ games in the arcade, User profiles, Crime Database, New front home site, Business Review Section and many other tweaks to make it a better experience.

I think the forums have served our community well over the last year. Friendships have been made, lost pets have been returned to their owners, goods and services have been exchanged, local businesses have prospered, schools and community events have benefited from the increased exposure and most of all, we have all made our community richer by communicating with each other.

The site will continue to improve technically, of course but I always eagerly await new neighbors who stumble on the site or are told by a neighbor. It is this, this human element that improves our site each day with each new neighbor coming on board.

If you are a resdient in Eastvale and not a member of the forums, please click here to join, you are missing all the fun!

Cheers to Eastvale!

Written by Mike Nava
Tuesday, 15 April 2008 21:18

Eastvale Community EventsAt last night's Town Hall Meeting, the Eastvale Events announced that the 2008 Picnic in the Park event will be a 3 day event. Over 100 people in attendance at last night's Eastvale Town Hall meeting at Rosa parks Elementary heard this announcement as well as a new retail center update for the corner of Archibald and Limonite.

Other updates from the CHP, Riverside Sherriff's Department, Code Enforcement, Eastvale Incorporation Committee and Eastvale's first Junior All American Football team all gave updates to the community at the meeting.

Last year's Picnic in the Park was a one day event was, by most accounts, the largest one day event ever for Eastvale. The stunning 15 minute fireworks show topped off the night and left the crowd amazed. This year, it will be a 3 day celebration starting June 27th and ending June 29th at Harada Heritage Park. There will be a Music Festival, Carnival followed by a Fireworks show on Saturday Evening.

There are vendor booths and other sponsorship opportunities available. Do not miss this opportunity to be part of this sure-to-be spectacular event! Visit www.eastvaleevents.com for more information. For more information on future Town Hall Meetings, please visit www.eastvaleedition.com
