Volunteerism in Your Child’s School
Written by Kelli Marine

As a working Mom of three daughters attending Elementary School, it is not easy to be a volunteer at their school.  Thankfully I have a home office that offers me some flexibility, but work comes first.  That being said I would like to share my experience and the benefits of being a voice and a familiar face at your children’s school.

The first time I ever worked in my oldest daughter’s class was in the 3rd grade. I had two other small children at home prior to that, so actually spending time in the classroom was out of the question up until that point.  I became the Room Mom and I grew to love the Fridays sitting in the classroom sorting papers and making copies for the teacher.  I was able to see my child in a classroom environment, get to know my children’s  friends and also see how the teacher interacts with the students.  Believe it or not, I also learned a few things that I have forgotten along the years!

The teacher and I also became friends and have now sent two of my children through her class.  Being a Room Mom was the start of my journey as a volunteer.

Over the years I have held many positions on the PTA Board which enable me to see the broader benefits of parents being involved.  Once a month,  the Corona-Norco Unified School District PTA Board meets at the district.  This meeting is attended by our District Superintendant and other District Executives, Principals, Assistant Principals, PTA Board Members and parents.  The meetings give insight to present and future plans for our district, as well as recognition for school site Principals and PTA Boards.   I look forward to these meetings and feel like I am getting the “inside scoop” about our district.

As a resident of Eastvale, you should be very proud that your child attends public school here.  In our district alone we had 278,148 hours of volunteer service for the 2006-2007 school year. If you paid PTA $7.50 for those hours, it would have cost the school district, $2,086,110.00 (figures taken from Heidi Pyle, PTA Council President).  So, next time you think about taking some time to volunteer in your child’s classroom or taking on a PTA Board position please realize that you are an important part of the scenery!
