ERHS Students take a STAND for Darfur
Written by Sarah Lemoine

STAND.  Itʼs what we do.

We stand for the people who cannot; The people who have suffered from the genocide in Darfur Africa for more than five years.  Many people remember the events of Rwanda, but very little know that it is happening yet again.  Since 2003, 450,000 people have been murdered and two and a half million people have been forced out of their own country into neighboring Chad and the situation grows more desperate every day.

In order to help the remaining people of Darfur and the people of Chad, a few high school students researched the topic and formed a club on their campus at Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Corona to raise awareness and funds for the people affected by this tragedy.  They are hosting a Darfur Benefit on May 24th from 4pm-9pm at the high school (7447 Cleveland Ave Corona CA 92280).  There will be food, vendors, speaker Laurel Smith and a movie all to promote the awareness of the genocide and to give hope to the community that there is something we can do about this injustice.  Also live performances by Kacey Oberoi, Everlynn, Haddonvale and Sleep is for Sleepers.

STAND would like to extend a warm invitation to all ages to come learn more about the genocide and ways to help.  STAND is also looking for more vendors to set up their booths, advertise for businesses, or sell products or goods of any family friendly kind.  Tickets go on sale Friday May 16th! Presale is $3 and at the door is $5.  Also, if you cannot make it to the event, we have several fundraisers that you may be interested in!

May 14th and 15th from 4pm-9pm we are having a fundraiser at the Pita Pit on Limonite next to Edwards Cinema in the Eastvale Gateway Shopping Center.  Bring a flyer and 20% of your purchases go directly to STAND!

On May 20th we are having a fundraiser at Pick Up Stix, also in the Eastvale Gateway Shopping Center all day, also bring the flyer and 20% is donated to STAND.

On May 31st, a fundraiser at Applebeeʼs will take place.  This is your once in a lifetime opportunity to have flapjacks at Applebeeʼs!  From 8pm-10pm, at Applebeeʼs on Limonite, STAND will be hosting a pancake breakfast.  Tickets are $10 each and include a full breakfast of pancakes, sausage, coffee, tea, bacon and toast!

Weʼd love to see you there!
