You have the ability to get new topics delivered to your e-mail address. You also have the ability to "follow" your favorite topics through the Subscribe option in your Control Panel (CP).

In every FORUM (Such as General Discussion, Crime, etc...) if you look to the right, you will see the link called Forum Tools. Click it and you see a "Subscribe to this forum" link. Click it and you are presented with Email options. The options are:

No email Notification (you will not be emailed, but subscribed posts are in your User CP. Go to your User Control Panel and look on the left. You will see "Subscribed Threads"

Instant notification by Email - As soon as there is a new topic posted you get an email WITH THE ENTIRE POST in the email.

Daily Updates by Email - End of the day you get all New Topics (not posts or replies to topics)

Weekly Updates by Email - End of the week, you get all New Topics (not posts or replies to topics)

These are called Subscriptions. these options are not new, but have been here since the forum opened. All users get these instructions in their welcome PM when they join as well.

The above option is good to get notified when there is a NEW TOPIC. You may not care to follow every new topic's replies or postings. So there is the same option for SUBSCRIBING TO THREADS. Subscribing to a thread is basically following (via email or Cpanel options) a topic. Every reply can be delivered to your email if you wish.

Same way as above, but go into the TOPIC (not the forum) and you will see Thread Tools. Click it and you see "Subscribe to Thread. Then the same email options as above.

Sometimes you may want to make a post and automatically "follow" the topic via email for every reply. When you post a new topic, look down a bit because there are more options.

Look for "Thread Subscription". The default is Do not Subscribe. If you click it, you will see email options. This way when there is a new repli, you get an email.

By defult, this is "Do not subscribe". If you want to change this for you and follow EVERY new topic you post, go to your Control Panel, look to the left and click Edit Options (10th link down on the left of your CP). You can now change this Thread Subscription Option for your account.

When the forum started, I had this set to Instant for everyone, but the emails were too much for people so I defaulted to No email and let you decide how much you want and what to follow.

I hope this helps. Some people are familar with how Yahoo Groups works and Yahoo has either ALL email or NO email, which they call web only. This is pretty flexible so you can have it both ways.
