That depends on what you want to follow.
You can get notified of new threads or new posts. The difference between a thread and a post is, a thread is a topic and a post is a post inside that topic. For example:
Crime (is a forum)
Report Crime (is a sub forum)
Once inside "Report Crime", you will see a list of all topics (threads). If you want to follow all topics under "Report Crime" click Forum Tools > "Subscribe to this Forum".
Then, anything posted in "Report Crime" will get e-mailed to you.
