I have a picture uploaded to my profile but for some reason I don't see it next to the messages I've posted. I can see that everyone else has a picture next to their name and message, where's mine?

That's because the Profile Picture is different from an Avatar. An avatar is the picture next to your post. Go to your control panel and look on the left. You have an option called Edit Avatar. That's what you want.
