View Full Version : New to the list or new to these types of bulletin boards?
If you browse the member list, you might see that there are a lot members logging in everyday, but have zero posts next to their names. First of all, Hello to you quiet members! http://scrapgirls.com.ipbhost.com/style_emoticons/default/waving-hi.gif Secondly, i know a lot of people would rather remain anonymous and prefer to just read what's going on in the community. I can understand, that's cool.
For those of you who would like to participate, but might be a little unconfident about posting, don't worry about it!! Just jump on in. If you have nothing to say right now, go ahead and try posting in the help desk "testing...testing" sub-forum so when you DO have something to say, you'll be ready to go! Just reply to this thread or start one of your own. That's how i played with the subscription settings and a few other things. Give it a shot!
Who knows? Mike might have some kind of posting contest in the future! http://www.3fatchicks.com/forum/images/smiles/scratchchin.gif

I would prefer spell check as well - but don't let it stop you. We want to know what is on your mind.:)

This iz a messige bored. If sumwun wants too be piky uhbowt yur spelling, than this ain't the plase for them. Cut luuuss and let yur feengurs fly.
Honestly though, if someone wants to make an opinion of you based on a typo or mis-spell once in a while, on a message board, they are going to find something no matter what. You're fat, or mean, or dumb, or have brown hair, whatever.
If it really is important to you, I do know people that type stuff in a word processing program to spell check it first and then just copy/paste it into the message box :)

Short version _--- what she said ^^^^^^ (see above post)
Slightly longer version
You can cheat, but it takes an extra step.
This is what I do for spell checking when i feel like worring about it.
I write my post, then copy it into word, or word pad, or some word processor, spell check it there, then copy and paste it back into the boards.
I have been doing this for years, for 2 reasons. one, Word has a better spell/grammar checker than any I have seen on forums. and two, if you post does not go through, you have a copy of your post in word so you can repost it.
IT will happen to you. You make a huge post, with lots of important stuff in it, word it just right, hit send, and you get an error message, and your long essayish post never gets posted on the boards. I have pulled my hair out over this at least a dozen times on other forums. But, now that I spell check it in Word, I always have a copy until Im sure it gets posted.

Thanks everyone for putting my mind to rest. I'm just a little gun shy because on an another site a few people made such a stink about people who could not spell. They even went as far as to say that they must be lower class and uneducated for not knowing how to spell. That is not always the case. I'm dyslexia ( if that is how you spell that) so things will get turn around often. But the cool thing is that studies have shown that people who are dyslexic are more intelligent. I not sure if that is true but I'm sticking with that.;) So take this post as a disclaimer and if my spelling offends you skip any post that I post. :D It is mosly like words like does vs dose.

I use Firefox and the new version has built in spell check, any field you type into it will automatically underline the mis-spelled word and allows you to right click on the word to get spelling suggestions. Plus Firefox has a lot of features that IMO is faster to use like tabbed browsing, pop-up blocker and less virus threats like MS products have. I know the new IE has these features but Mozilla has had them for quite a while now and they work well.
The best part is it's FREE, Mozilla Download (http://mozilla.com)
After you have it installed, check out Mozilla Add-ons (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/) for tons of gadgets and add ins to make browsing even easier.
Linda, I know you have asked me about spellcheck, and as I type this I see someone mention Firefox. That is a good solution.
The reason I have not put a Spell check in here is first, I need to make sure this board is running perfect. All bells and whistles must work well before I take on a major feature like that. And it is big. I cannot test it really, like on a practice template then launch it.
I have only seen a few spell checks for these Vbulletin boards and from what other admins say, they are a pain in the butt. They take a performance hit on the site, there is a learning curve on some of them because of pop-ups they produce and honestly, I am not ready to take that on now.
I like the Firefox idea. The browser does the spell check for you. Also, I like the Word Processor idea, which I use quite a bit. When I have more time and investigate good products and make sure all is well here I will look seriously into an in-line spell check.
I probably log more spelling errors than anyone here.
